About the Program
“California’s Best Places to Work” program, sponsored by Employers Group, was designed to identify organizations with leading-edge employee benefits and best Human Resources practices. The statewide program gave participating organizations an opportunity to identify and quantify their strengths and weaknesses relative to their work environments. Besides identifying employers who excel in creating a positive and rewarding workplace, the program also helps participants recognize areas for improvement.

Every participant received a set of report cards outlining the company’s final scores from a Work Assessment Survey to see how they compare to other companies in the survey program. Additionally, those who moved into the semi-finalist phase of the competition also received a summary assessment of their employees’ responses to an Employee Opinion Survey. This survey was created to show how employees feel about their company’s policies, such as compensation, employee communication, etc.

Click here for the program FAQ's.

How the Top Companies were Determined
All California businesses with 25 or more regular employees were eligible to enter, including all employers with significant operations, or independent profit and loss responsibilities, located in California.

As mentioned above, a two-part process was designed to gather detailed data about each participating company.

Part I - Work Assessment Survey
Each company completed a questionnaire covering nine categories, including work-life balance, benefits, training, diversity, pay, turnover, perks and benefits. Many companies chose to use this survey alone, as it provides a blueprint and source of ideas for new practices to implement.

Part II - Employee Satisfaction Survey
The semi-finalist companies that moved on to this phase of the program were asked to conduct an Employee Satisfaction Survey among randomly selected employees.

The scores from the initial employers’ survey and the Employee Satisfaction Surveys were combined and analyzed to determine the final rankings among the following employee size groups:

Growing Companies: (25 to 49)
Small-Sized companies (50-99 employees)
Medium-Sized Companies (100-499 employees)
Large-Sized Companies (500+ employees or more)
